Each magic item embodies a piece of Alice herself, draining the life force of whoever uses it to fuel a certain purpose

• The shard of Alice is the shattered physical body of Alice’s arm.
• Separate from Alice, shards are vessels capable of supernatural feats.
• Shards have many names; some view shards as the manifestation of spirits.
• Shards are containers for the Scent of Alice.
• Shards, fallen upon certain things, will grant them Magic.

The shards, whether they are conscious or not, naturally wish to return to Alice. Shards act as a bridge to return the Scent of Alice to its owner. In the process, they disrupt the world and introduce new possibilities to its future. Hence, holders of shards often appear to have exchanged supernatural abilities known as Magic.

Some shards of Alice inhabited objects, turning them into a magic item. Some inhabited living things, turning them into a magic being (Monsters).

Deceased, a magic being's remnants. Only items created through a ritual will be magical, where the ritual transfers the scents within. The rest of the body is still useful but void of the Scent of Alice, life, possibility, and future, and is therefore no longer magical… Nor alive.

However, losing the Scent of Alice within them, they lacked the power source to channel their supernatural abilities. The Scent of Alice may be received from other lifeforms, such that the process is vampiric as the exchange of power drains life.

• Some shards of Alice forcefully drain the life of other lifeforms, a short-term but rewarding source of the scent. Therefore, magic items and beings who aggressively drain the scent off of humans and other life forms are known as Demons.
• Some shards of Alice form contract with lifeforms to have a more long-term source of the scent. Therefore, magic items and beings who bond to humans and other lifeforms are known as Familiars.

When a being is born, it absorbs an exfoliation — a sprinkle of Alice’s scent. It represents that life’s future potential. The more capable the being becomes, the more Scent of Alice accumulates within them. Thus representing the greater possible future of that being. Typically, those with stronger aspirations will attract and accumulate more Scent of Alice for conscious lifeforms.

It is not an energy source. It is a possibility. It is the future. A thing without her scent has no future as if they have no place within this world.

The same goes for magic items. When an item is forged, it carries a proportionate amount of the scent it absorbs to create it. As it becomes familiar to a user, it will absorb more from its user and its surroundings.

In the places where concentrations of Alice’s love gather. The earth bears more fruit, fish swarm the bay, and livestock multiply like rabbits. All bigger, plumper, more succulent and luscious than anywhere else. The people are healthier, their days longer, and their minds tranquil till their final minutes.

However, those deposits similarly attract/spawn monsters — goblins and demons alike. The scent is so strong that, being her shards, these creatures cannot resist gathering them. Luckily, most deposits lie deep within the earth, only to have their scents drawn above ground through the roots of trees. Which occasionally rains in the wind as shimmering, glimmering rain. Thus, these forests are often or not, maintained, revered and protected above ground.

Sometimes, the trees themselves are petrified into Shards of Alice. Trunks become petrified, and leaves are filled with bloody veins overflowing with the Witch’s scent. They’re often situated above shard deposits.
